a girl I once knew

she had a sort of gift
her smile travelled from ear to ear
from lips to lips – from eyes to eyes
until it came back to her
she was that sort of gal you’d meet on a rainy day
without an umbrella
her white socks drenched in water
-a hole in her shoes and somehow
she still smiled
she was always so present
talking so much – making others laugh
like there was no tomorrow.
And one day, for her,
there came a day without.
She didn’t leave a note
Nobody knew why she did it

her parents couldn’t explain, her lover drunk himself into oblivion And myself
I cried so much, and yet I never ran out of tears
I remembered the time I left myself see it
for the first time
(and decided to pretend I didn’t comprehend)
there was no sparkle in her eyes when she smiled And she smiled all the time.
On her certificate they could have wrote
Cause of death: suicide
she was so depressed she smiled herself to death.
